Under a Stay at Home Order? Ideas For Boosting Business Anyway!

With nearly half of all Americans under mandated “Stay at Home” orders due to the current 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, many spas and salons are closed or seeing decreased appointments. Almost everyone in our industry is being affected by this pandemic, in one way or another.

I have been speaking with clients this week, and everyone is looking for the same thing – a way to get through this unusual situation with not only their health but their mental health AND their businesses intact and ready to move forward. But how?

While the world is worrying, we have been thinking – and I have heard some amazing ideas! As a community member, I know I am looking for ways to support the local businesses in my community, and I bet many of your clients are looking to do the same. Why not offer them ways to do so, while abiding by these “Stay at Home” mandates and the social distancing practices our government is advising?

Looking for some ideas? I have included some of my favorites below, but if you have others, I would love to hear about them!

Gift Certificates
Selling gift certificates for services is a great way to bring in some revenue now, while not needing to actually perform the services now. Utilize your social media, website, and even local neighborhood apps and sites to advertise Gift Certificate specials! Maybe you want to include a free add-on service with every Gift Certificate sold, or run a “Buy One, Get One” type deal. No matter what offer you include when selling your Gift Certificates, remind your clients that you are a small business, and just want to ensure they are safe, happy, and healthy – both now and in the future!

At-Home Hair Color Kits
I have spoken with a number of hair salons who are mixing up At-Home Color Kits to sell to their clients. We have probably all seen the funny memes about how few selfies are being posted, now that the salons are all closed. And funny as they may be, your clients are probably worrying about the state of their hair color during this stressful time. Instead of your clients turning to Target or CVS for their hair color, have them come to you! Creating do-it-yourself kits, especially mixed for THEIR hair color, will be a welcome luxury your clients will love! And they will remember who thought of them (and their roots!) when this is all over. PLUS, you won’t have a “boxed-hair color mess” to have to fix when the country is back up and running again!

Breathe and Relax Kits
Don’t get me wrong – this is a stressful time for all of us. But even if you can’t provide a relaxing massage or reflexology appointment, you CAN helps your clients take a few minutes for themselves to Breathe and Relax. Including aromatherapy favorites like essential oils, client comfort items, such as herbal neck wraps, or even sheet masks your clients can do at home, these kits will be a hit with your clients, providing them with a few minutes of stress relief.

Polish, Gel, and Dip Powder Removal Kits
Believe me, I understand that gel or dip powder removal at home is less than ideal, but so is allowing your clients to either unsafely remove these products, or (possibly worse) not remove these products from their nails for extended periods of time at all. Offering your clients effective products to remove their nail enhancements – and maybe a coupon for reapplication once open again – will be a welcome (and safer) option for your clients…not to mention a way for your business to bring in some revenue!
