Nurturing Touch – Modern Massage for Children

I was just reading an article on MassageTherapy.com in which Tiffany Field, Ph.D., of the Touch Research Institute (TRI) in Miami, Fla. was quoted as saying, “Every child, no matter the age, should be massaged at bedtime on a regular basis.” We know touch is the first sense to develop in humans and it is vital to our health and well-being. The article

on MassageTherapy.com also explains that, “Touch is the first sense to develop in humans. It is essential to our health and well-being. Babies have been known to fail to thrive and even die without an adequate amount of physical contact.”

So I was excited to see this new book released called, “A Modern Day Guide to Massage for Children” by Tina Allen. Ms. Allen is an award winning author, international lecturer and authority on pediatric massage. This beautifully illustrated book provides families and professionals an easy to follow guide to incorporating nurturing touch into the lives of children. Ms. Allen managed the nation9s first comprehensive pediatric massage program at Children9s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), where she trained volunteer massage therapists and medical professionals to work with hospitalized Rehabilitation patients, medically complex infants in the Center for Newborn and Infant Critical Care (CNICC), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Children with Retinoblastoma, Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy. She is currently consulting on the development of comprehensive pediatric massage programs for The Mayo Clinic, Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Hasbro Children9s Hospital, Connecticut Children9s Medical Center, Shriner9s Hospital and Sutton Children9s Medical Center. During a recent spa visit, I had the please of being rolled out like a pie crust with a Warm Bamboo Massage. I have never felt so relaxed, pampered, warm, cozy, and de-knotted during and after a massage. This brilliant treatment REALLY gets the kinks out and leaves the body feeling like dough; warm, happy, malleable and amazing! During this time of year, clients can be reluctant to book ho-hum massages because they tend to get cold during treatments… this happens to ME all the time! That is why I am so in love with Warm Bamboo massages; you are giving the client a memorable and enjoyable experience as well as insuring they remain warm and pampered throughout the service.

Service Description & Benefits:

The massage therapist will roll, knead and glide warm Bamboo reeds along the back, shoulders, feet and legs. This movement coupled with warmth of the rods helps to break up knots and tense muscles, improving circulation and promoting lymphatic drainage (I love to have my thighs rolled!). Eastern Spa Decor – Buddha Incense Holder

Elegant and meaningful decor touches can create the perfect ambiance in your spa space – not matter how

large or small. That’s why I love this intriguing Buddha Tower Incense Holder from our East meets West department.

This unique piece is intended to be used with your stick incense, or as a decorative treasure. Standing approximately 13 1/2″ in height, it is a tall cylinder decorated with the image of a laughing Buddha. Adorned with representations of Chinese coins at his feet and stamped out along the cylinder so incense smoke and fragrance can escape and the base of the holder.

Chinese coins have been meticulously carved as symbols of prosperity and good fortune. It measures approximately 3 3/4″ in diameter, and is colored primarily in black and gold. Would look beautiful next to some rechargeable votive candles and a Shiva Lingam stone for energy, purification and positive vibrations.

Pure Spa Direct has more than just spa and salon supplies, we have unique items that help you put your own personal touch into your business that is the perfect reflection of you.

I’ve noticed at a few nail spas I’ve visited, the assistant will clean out pedicure stations, sinks and restrooms with unmarked bottles of diluted, watered down, soapy mystery fluid. A Rude Receptionist Could Be Killing Business

As busy day spa and salon owners, we are concentrating on the bigger picture (expenses, overhead, staffing, stock and traffic. Yet, as the old saying goes, “The devil is in the details”.

Friendly or Frightening?
How is your receptionist
treating YOUR clients?

I don’t even know if the majority of spa and salon owners realize how the receptionist is truly treating walk-ins, appointment inquiries or phone calls from new clients with questions about services. I feel that most of us felt good about the person we hired for reception, trained them, and then moved on to running the show. But how often are spa and salon owners stopping to closely review how the receptionist is doing on an ongoing basis? We can never forget that the receptionist is the lifeblood of the business, and checking in often is critical.

I bring this topic up because there are several swanky beauty / spa businesses I frequent here on Long Island that I love… but I CRINGE to call or personally interact with their apathetic, incredibly irritable receptionists. It is so bad, it deters my desire for future appointments. When a receptionist is visibly or audibly irritated by an inquiry or request from a paying or potential client, it sends out the worst impression about the business and the talent under that roof that can not be easily reversed.

So what to do? I have my friends and family call my business randomly and act like a first time customer… running through the tedious first time client questions like pricing, stylist info., and scheduling to make sure the reception team answers happily, (like it’s the first time they ever answered those questions). I encourage my team to SMILE when they are on the phone with all clients, and in person. The client automatically feels better about her conversation, better about your business and better about making more appointments.

Bikini Waxing for Sensitive Skin – Don’t Get Burned

I recently had a pricey wax done at a famous five star salon here in New York. If you read my blogs you’ll know I typically do my own waxing because I don’t trust double dippers… but this salon assured me that they follow the strictest hygienic protocol since they are a medical spa facility.

Ahhh… protect skin and keep
Clients coming back!

Little did I know, double dipping should have been the LEAST of my concerns. I should have run out of there as soon as I noticed the tech did not even bother to prep my skin. She went straight into the service with strip wax on my bikini area and started ripping. I winced in agony and could feel the burn of my fragile skin and asked, “Aren’t you going to apply pre wax oil?” She said, “No, we don’t do that here!”. Oh my goodness… 15 minutes later my French Cut bikini wax looked more like French Fried! In between my legs were two, pink, pork chop sized burns from a rough waxing procedure with no prep. Argh! And I was leaving for Aruba in the morning!

My skin has become conditioned to a natural oil prep. The oil helps to protect the skin so the wax pulls up only the coarse hair, not the skin. So despite their fancy blend of red currant and berry wax, without a conditioning prep, my skin took weeks to heal and I spent my vacation in a muu muu.

Take the pain out
of Waxing

I can’t say enough about the quality, integrity and effectiveness of Mancine waxes for clients like me with ultra sensitive skin. Their Pre-Wax Prepatory Oil is one of the best I tried. Brazilian Strawberry or Vanilla Flexxx waxes are also exceptional… and I have tried a countless number of professional waxes. I told the esthetician I was incredibly sensitive… a patch test should have been performed.

Try prepping your client. See what a difference it makes in their comfort, efficiency and removal!

Injecting Profits into Spas – Call the Doctor to Give Clients a Lift

Injectables offer spa clients more dramatic
and youthful results.

There comes a time in any client’s skincare regime when they have exhausted the routine of facials, microderm packages, masks and creams in their quest to stay youthful – they want more. Many small spa businesses and estheticians find themselves trying to decide what to add to their menu as a next level of treatment to address more aggressive signs of aging for these types of clients. Some will opt for purchasing or leasing IPL machines, lasers, or various types of equipment in hopes of helping clients reach that next level of rejuvenation. But with these types of units costing $10,000 – $40,000 (and results varying client to client), the investment can sometimes go bust. Not to mention, if your competitor down the street gets the same unit, sales for these services can quickly go flat.

“Injectable Fillers for age conscious clients compliment
skin care services spas already offer.” -Dr. Joel Lamm
(Photo: 2 days post cheek injections, Botox & Juvaderm XC)

Recently, I took my mom to see my dermatologist, Dr. Joel Lamm, for his signature “Liquid Face Lift”. My 64 year-old working mom sees Dr. Lamm to “work his magic,” lifting, plumping, sculpting and filling her badly aged face with Botox and Juvederm XC. Not only is this “Liquid Face Lift” a serious confidence booster, she feels it is important not to look her age in this tumultuous job market (but that is a whole other blog). She, like many other spa clients, had exhausted her efforts of anti-aging facials, peels and microderm treatments and was ready for a serious boost of beauty.

While there with my mom, Dr. Lamm told me in addition to his dermatology practice on Long Island, he has begun seeing clients at a popular day spa in Tribeca. He visits once a month to see the spa’s existing and new clients who want Botox, Juvederm, Restylane or “the works” – aka the Liquid Lift my mom gets. He explained this mutually beneficial arrangement with the spa allows him to expand his clientele, while the spa gets to offer top-notch injectable services that clients want.

This arrangement makes sense. When a client is ready for a dramatic and long-lasting boost of beauty – why should they leave the spa and go seek out a dermatologist, why lose that business? This type of working relationship benefits all parties.

  • Spa retains clients and keeps offerings current
  • Spa attracts new clients interested in fillers – but wary of Physician’s offices
  • Dermatologist and Spa share revenue from service
  • Dermatologist sees clients once a month – doesn’t pay rent for a second location
  • Clients get to have treatment in a comfortable environment they trust and know
  • Clients get to look drastically better, and still visit the spa for facials and treatments in between injections.
  • One-stop beauty for spa and esthetic clients

So how should you find a reputable dermatologist that will be a good fit for your business? Check with Allergan, http://www.botoxcosmetic.com/FAD.aspx. They have a website that allows you to locate a certified Physician who performs injectables. Contact them and start a dialog! My advice, stick with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Sorry, but I would not take my mom to see a podiatrist that is certified to inject Botox! Dr. Lamm is located in Hicksville, NY – http://www.lammdermatology.com/ and specializes in creating natural looking (but astounding) effects with injectables.
