Perfect for Warmer Weather – Palm Tree Nail Designs

The weather is finally getting warmer here in New York, and what better time to jump ahead and play with fun nail designs that make you think of warmer weather? I came across these Palm Tree nail art designs and instantly thought of warm weather, summer, and vacations. All you need is polishes in sunset colors of red, pink, and yellow. Black polish for the palm tree design and a thin nail art brush.

And if you’re not into the sunset look, check out the palm tree design with more of a beach background. All you need for this one is to change the background color to two shades of blue and a bit of yellow:

These designs will definitely help your clients get ready for the summer months!

Nail Trend: Caviar Manicures, Doug Gets One!

MIA Caviar beads, just after a few hours.

Here at Pure Spa, we are are always looking into new trends in the Salon, Nail, Massage and Day Spa markets. We are constantly seeking out new lines that can offer your business services and merchandise to help keep you on trend with what clients are looking for. Whether it’s an awesome new pedicure, facial or Massage, we know that staying current is an important aspect to retaining and attracting clients. So we were very intrigued to learn about the Caviar Manicure craze this summer and were considering bringing it on board to Pure Spa.

When our Caviar nail beads showed up for beta testing we ran into a glitch. All of our usual test subjects just had Shellac manicures, so the only person with a clean nail was Doug Dema in our Marketing department…poor Doug, I had to send an apology note to his wife. We were all so eager to try out the process, Doug allowed me to test out a few of his nails to evaluate the application process and the quality of the wear.

So the Caviar Bead Manicure process begins like any other manicure:

1) Clean and prep nail
2) Base coat
3) 2 Polish coats – one nail at a time
4) Now sprinkle on Caviar beads while nail by nail while polish is wet.
5) Pat beads carefully into nail, taking care to make sure the edges are fully covered.
6) After 10-15 drying (we did not use a lamp or dryer), Apply a clear top coat.

Doug Does Caviar –
And Not Very Well.

Without the top coat, the beads are not going to stay on for more than a few hours.

After applying a thick top coat, it took about 30-40 minutes for the nail to fully dry and the beads to feel “locked in” – again, we did not use a lamp or dryer.

After all this drying time, the manicure and the Caviar beads did hold up through several hand washings and Doug’s daily routine of banging stuff around, but after a few hours, beads starting falling off.

So what was the verdict? This is a cute trend but we felt it was a service that was too long to perform in light of it’s temporary results. It is on trend for the younger age groups, and with the time involved in doing it well, and doing it right – the price point for this manicure would need to be in the $45 range, which we feel may be too much. And at that price point, clients will want a manicure that lasts longer than a few days.

Alternatively, I have heard from some salons that are just adding the Caviar to one nail, like the ring finger. That sounds a bit more practical.

Shellac and Gelish manicures are still the number one trend of choice for our salon and spa shoppers!

Lots of Broken Nails? Educate Your Clients on Nail Care

Do your regular clients come in for their manicures complaining of their nails breaking in between services? (I am definitely guilty of this!) Well, nail care goes way beyond the salon and it is important for you to inform them on how to properly take care of their nails outside of their regular manicure services. By educating them and offering products/items they can use at home, you will find yourself with a lot more happier clients that keep coming back!

Some tips for preventing nail breakage:

  • We all know biting our nails is just a bad habit, but it is also very detrimental to your nails! It leaves the nails thin and weak and they are more likely to get caught on other surfaces and break due to the jagged and uneven edges. When informing your clients of this, offer to apply nail art, which will discourage them for wanting to bite off the fun designs! =)
  • Make sure to keep your retail area stocked full of buffers and fine-grain grit files for your clients to use at home. In between services, your clients nails are going to grow and nails grow unevenly and can cause weakness in some spots. Remember to let them know to file in ONE direction. (filing in both directions will tear the nails)
  • Keeping the nails painted at all times, whether it regular polish, gel polish, or hard gel will keep the nails thicker, making it more resistant against breakage. Also, inform your clients to not pick at the polish or gel polish, as this will cause the nails to become weak.
  • Use nail strengthening treatments as a base coat or top coat!
  • Keep nails strong and hydrated with cuticle oil. use it during the services and suggest they use it at home every day as well. This is another item you’ll definitely want to keep fully stocked in your retail area. Quick and easy up-sell to your clients!
  • Constantly washing hands can dry them out. Let your client know to always apply lotions after they have washed their hands and to try and avoid getting their hands wet when doing dishes or cleaning. Its a great idea to retail the hand lotion you use on your clients during manicures and let them know they can purchase it as well!

With these simple tips, you are sure to see less and less nail breakage from your clients! =)
