Shellac Attack – The Single Mom’s Stress-Free Answer! Day 1 – Review by Tara

Like most women, I like to look cute and put together. But as a single Mom of 2, I do not have hours (sometimes I don’t even have minutes!) to put into getting ready. I love to have my nails prettily manicured, but who has the time to go to the nail salon every week? And do them myself? By the time I have 5 free minutes to paint my nails, it is bedtime – and then I wake up with the inevitable sheet marks! When I heard about the new CND Shellac system – a UV-cured hybrid nail color that claims to last 14-days – I was so excited. As in dreaming about it every night the week before it was released excited. I mean, even I can spare 30 minutes every two weeks for the perfect manicure!

Finally, Shellac day was here. I had my hands manicured – filed my nails, clipped my cuticles, and made them look extra pretty. After all, if I am going to have a beautiful manicure last 2 weeks, I want to start with the prettiest palette possible! The process is amazingly easy (and in case you didn’t notice, EASY is high on my list of necessities!) – apply base coat (just like polish), cure for 10 seconds under the UV lamp. Apply 1 coat of color, cure for 2 minutes. Apply second color coat, cure for 2 minutes. Apply top coat, cure for 2 minutes. Wipe thoroughly with 99% alcohol (this is the
MOST IMPORTANT step) to remove the top layer film and DONE! My nails were beautifully painted in the exotic Tropix color, shiny, and DRY!

For my first Shellac test, I immediately put my hand in my pocket to retrieve my watch and lip gloss. I will admit it – I was nervous. I am Queen of having creases and lines in my nail polish, because I always forget to have everything out of my purse or pockets before polishing. Not to mention having to change a diaper or fix a broken toy… With Shellac, IT DIDN’T MATTER! I stuck my hand in my pocket, got my watch, pulled my hand back out – and my polish was still PERFECT!

The most amazing part about my manicure is how glossy it is. My nails honestly look wet. I have tried tons of top coats to obtain that high-gloss shine that lasts, to no avail. Shellac is different – it looks like I just left the salon. Finally, stress-free nails! YAY!

Cream of the Crop: The Best Top Coats!

A vast majority of Nail Technicians will always say that their absolute favorite Top Coat, hands down, is the Seche Vite Crystal Clear Top Coat. We here at Pure Spa love the feedback that our clients provide and I personally have sworn by Seche Vite for years as well. A recent experience, however, made me reconsider my unyielding devotion and maybe, just maybe, allow 2 top coats to be favorites.

Last week I tried a lovely new nail salon. The staff was warm and gracious and they were exceptionally patient while it took me forever and a day to choose my polish colors. I like to bring my own top and base coats and while the technician was more than happy to oblige with my Poshe Base Coat, she said that she would much rather use her ‘Out the Door’ Top Coat. Seeing as I had never used that particular product before, I decided to go for it.

The final verdict? I absolutely LOVE Out the Door Top Coat! While this does not mean I am saying goodbye to Seche Vite, it does mean that there is a new, fantastic option depending upon your clients needs.

Out the Door Top Coat Experience:

  • Applied evenly, did not have to be globbed on.
  • Medium amount of Shine.
  • 3-5 minute drying time. The manufacturer says the product dries in 45 seconds, however, it took several minutes for my nails to no longer be tacky.
  • Most importantly, this product LASTS. Despite going to a Water Park and doing a significant amount of house cleaning, I did not experience any kind of chipping until the 6th day of my manicure! Who knows how long it could have lasted if I took it easy on my nails?
  • Needs to be applied thickly, as product itself is thick. The more, the better!
  • Very high Shine – Nails look wet.
  • 1-2 minute dry time MAX. My nails are A-OK to dig into my purse for keys approximately 2 minutes after Seche Vite top coat application.
  • Typically, I start to experience peeling on the 3rd day. Water and cleaning supplies have caused it to lift automatically.
Deciding which top coat to use all depends upon the needs of your client. When you have clients that love the wet look and/or cannot sit at the nail dryer for an extended period of time, Seche Vite Top Coat is the way to go. Clients who have some time to spare and are looking for a longer-lasting manicure can be offered Out the Door Top Coat. Providing you client with options will help garner loyalty and help increase profits!

The Toe Rope

Allow me to introduce Toe Rope. Quite popular last week so I looked into it a bit. The name made me think it was something crazy from 50 Shades of Gray, but it is not. It’s used for separating toes during a pedicure! Who knew? And how clever! It also comes in a cool little dispenser box and within the box they’re all rolled up. Looks pretty cool to me… why? I have no idea… I’m just a shipping guy! See our great Toe Rope selection HERE!

Nail Polish Ingredients Explained

It seems that nowadays everyone is very cautious about what products they are using based o the ingredients. The more they know, the more comfortable they are with using a product. I recently came across an article in NailPro Magazine explaining what the main ingredients are in nail polishes. As a salon owner, having this knowledge will help when answering client questions about what is actually in that little bottle.

So here’s a breakdown of some of the main ingredients:

  • Resin –> Nitrocellulose (that9s a film-forming resin) or anything with the words polymer, copolymer, or resin.
    • Basically this is what hold the polish together. Nail polish traditionally requires two types of resin: film-forming and adhesive. The film-forming resin gives the dried polish a shiny texture, while the adhesive polymer adds flexibility, so it is less brittle.
  • Solvent –> Ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, propyl acetate, and isopropyl acetate.
    • This ingredient is what makes the polish easy to apply and spread evenly, as well as helps the polish dry quicker.
  • Dispersants –> Stearalkonium hectorite, stearalkonium bentonite.
    • Additives that help mix pigments with the resin and solvent. This slows the process of settling and separation in the bottle.
  • UV Stabilizers –>Benzophenone, often followed by a dash and the number one.
    • This will prevent sunlight from changing the color or fading the polish.
  • Plasticizers –>Trimethyl pentanyl diisobutyrate, triphenyl phosphate, camphor, and ethyl tosylamide
    • This causes the manicures to last longer by keeping the resin flexible once it is dry.
  • Dyes and Pigments –>“CL” followed by numbers on the label; that9s the index number for the color used.
    • Makes up the color that is chosen by the client.
  • Micas –> Mica
    • This is the ingredient that adds shimmer to the polish.

The more knowledge you have about your products, the more your clients will trust you and keep coming back.
